The role of an endoscopy technician involves assisting physicians during endoscopic, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures. Duties may include preparing instruments, cleaning equipment, and rooms for procedures.

Technicians may also assist with specimen collection and documentation. They also perform routine clerical duties, ensuring that all instruments are cleaned and sterile per manufacturer specifications. They often assist physicians and registered nurses during procedures and enjoy solving practical problems.

An endoscopy technician can work alone or with other technicians and medical professionals. The role can also include administering anesthesia, monitoring patient safety, and assisting with room turn-around. An endoscopy technician may also troubleshoot endoscopic software programs. To be successful as an endoscopy technician, you need to be certified in endoscopy technology.

The demand for endoscopy technicians is growing, and many individuals choose to earn a higher education while working full-time in this profession. And the pay is good for entry-level positions, and a recent graduate can expect to earn an average annual salary of $36,000, and the top 10% can earn up to $43,000.

Endoscopy technicians can earn decent salaries and work anywhere in the world. However, the job is only for some, as many people do not have the stomach to examine the interiors of a patient’s body. They will have to deal with scary and gross things like colon cancer, cirrhosis, and irritable bowel syndrome. If you have the stomach for the job, you might enjoy this career path.

If you’re wondering how to become a certified endoscopy technician, it usually starts by pursuing a college degree or applying for physical or online training. In most cases, the training takes less than a year to complete. Many schools offer an open enrollment policy, meaning that students can begin to enroll as soon as the start date is published. However, some schools require prospective students to attend in-person interviews and take an entrance exam.

Some training programs may require certification, which can significantly improve your job prospects. Endoscopy technicians who obtain certification will be able to enjoy higher salaries. Whether you work for a hospital or in a clinic, your certificate will help you stand out from the competition. It will also allow you to demand a higher starting wage and raises each year.
